The Kindle Fire is the newest edition to the kindle family of ereaders from Amazon.com. The Kindle Fire brings readers full color viewing, among other things, providing users with a more pleasant reading experience. Fulfilling a long held feature request certainly isn’t the only thing the all new Kindle Fire brings to the table, not by a long shot. Amazon has turned the latest kindle ereader into a full blown tablet computer, allowing people to check and send email, watch online videos, access their favorite websites, like face-book and twitter, or just surf the net. While the Kindle Fire Release Date isn’t scheduled until November 15, it is available for pre-order on the Amazon website. So, based on the information Amazon has released, and our experience with computers I have written a pre-release Kindle Fire Review outlining where I think that the new tablet will excel and where it might fall a bit short.
Kindle Fire Review, The Pro’s
The Kindle Fire uses a modified android operation system to keep with the ereader theme, providing a simple easy to learn user interface. It a high quality resolution LCD monitor which provides excellent digital images. It’s has a custom web browser that makes surfing the net faster by taking advantage of amazons extensive knowledge of internet surfers habits and pre-loads pages ahead of time, anticipating what links you are likely to click on. You can surf the net anywhere there is an wifi connection since it has a build in wifi card which will connect to all the most common types of wifi 802.11 b/g/n. For fast program execution it has been give a 1 GHz dual core processor, providing users the ability to quickly utilize multiple programs at once. Of course it easily interfaces with the kindle bookstore, so you can simply download new ebooks whenever you need. Extra storage is provided on Amazon’s cloud storage, removing the possibility you’ll lose your digital data due to hardware error and making it accessible for anywhere with an internet connection. The Kindle Fire was designed with maximum portability in mind, it weighs less than a pound and can be easlily held in one hand, making it extremely mobile. Upon release a wide range of accessories and cases will be available so users can customize their Kindle Fire just the way they want to, personalizing their kindle fire to match themselves. Amazon shocked everybody when they announced the low price starting at only $199 dollars, making this one of the least expensive tablet computers to hit the market and less than half the cost of the least expensive iPad 2.
Kindle Fire Review, The Con’s
As great as it is, Amazon decided that There were a few things that the Kindle Fire could do without. No memory expansion slots was provided to allow people to travel with additional content, this is made up for by providing customers with cloud storage, however this requires an internet connection, bringing me to my second point. No 3g internet. In order to access the web you will have to find an area with a wireless internet connection or use your phone to access this internet. Many on the android smart phone will now work as a wifi hot spot, meaning you don’t have to pay for internet on 2 devices. No camera/video camera. People have gotten used to seeing camera’s on everything, but I’m glad to see that opted for a lower price point instead of giving us another low quality camera that we won’t use. No direct access to android tablet app store. Since amazon is using a modified version of the android tablet OS it has to create it’s own Kindle Fire app store. Amazon has been working with app developers to fill their app store with lots of high functioning apps. They state that they have apps developed or in development to replace all the major apps in the android tablet store. However, it may take a bit of time for a particular app that you want to be available for the kindle and some of the smaller or more obscure apps may not be available at all.
Kindle Fire Review, Conclusions
I am really excited for the Kindle Fire release Date on November 15, all of the features that were excluded from the tablet all contributed to keeping it’s price low, making for a highly functional and very affordable tablet computer. My only complaint is that it doesn’t have an option for 3G mobile internet. However, paying $100 per month for mobile internet kind of eliminates the advantages of getting a $200 dollar tablet. Once I thought about this a bit more it will primarily be used for web surfing and reading, meaning I will be stationary while using the device, making the lack of mobile internet a moot point.
While many new devices are release and do nothing more than clutter up the existing products. The Kindle Fire is a welcome addition to the tablet market, filling in a void for a high quality computer at an affordable price. I’ve heard that the pre orders are already expected to out sell the latest iPad launch, meaning that the Kindle Fire will be THE hot product this Christmas. I expect that the tablet will be pretty hard to come by after it’s initial release date, meaning if you want one before January you should pre-order now.
